Which engine code? Do you want a top quality unit or a piece of crap that will fail in 13 months?

    hello crasher,how are you doing?
hope all is well with one and all.
just a quickie, and hope i never have to take your advice,(don't take that the wrong way,i would be eternally grateful should i ever need it),but hope the bora keeps on delivering,as it has since we got him.
    just a question about parts.
we all assume that when a part fails,it's best to replace it with "an original".
    genuine vw,or audi,or whatever.
    is that true?
some cars are built to a performance, some to a "standard",and i'm sure, some to a "price".
would thier be a better "after market" turbo to fit a bora ,asz?
or would you go with vw standard?
no great panic,it hasn't gone, hope it never does!!!!
but do you see where i'm coming from?
    2001,warranty long gone.
    keep hold,
    stewy.
first time i was up a ladder i was down a well
    4th cog,--two to go

Mateus, PM me your reg number.

Stewy, parts quality is a subject close to my heart. The reason I get so obsessive about it is I have to fit the parts and a failed part is not only inconvenient for the customer, it is extremely inconvenient and embarrassing for me. Let’s take a 2003 Golf 4 1.8T GTI as an example and say it needs a new turbo due to oil starvation from a blocked sump pickup and for the sake of argument, the engine has survived. Now the owner asks me to price it up so I price up an exchange VAG turbo, nuts, bolts, gaskets, coolant, oil feed pipe, oil, oil filter and labour with all parts being genuine. That lot comes out at around £1200 but he has a quote from nobby the arch monkey for £700 as he is using a recon turbo from some muppets up the road, he won’t change the oil pipe or the once only fastener’s and his labour is less. Now I could also fit the same turbo but if it fails (which does happen) it will cost me a days labour and all the consumables again so about £500 down the drain and an argument with the suppliers who will try every possible trick to avoid accepting liability. If I fit a genuine exchange turbo, it is less likely to fail and if it does it has a two year warranty that includes labour so all I do is point the car at a VW dealer and they do the work. When my Octavia VRS need a new turbo, I fitted a genuine unit as I practice what I preach.
