Hi all i am new to this forum and i know this question has probably been asked a million times before but please humour me.

I have just bought an A3 2.o TDI sport, which drives fine but does produce quite a lot of black smoke, especially when i boot it. I know a lot of people say this is normal but my friend has one and it doesn't smoke anywhere near as much.

    Any ideas much appreciated. Thanks!

Black smoke is due to an air to fuel ratio imbalance, either the fuel system is delivering too much fuel into the engine or there is not enough clean air, a few things to look for :
    • Faulty injectors (injectors need attention at about 100.000 to 120 000 miles)
    • Faulty injector pump
    • Dirty air cleaner
    • Turbocharger or intercooler faulty
    • Problems within cylinder head, valves clogged up due to faulty EGR (exhaust gas recycling unit)
Failure is not an option, It is a privilege reserved only for those who try.

I've just been trying to look on VAGCAT.com to see if there is a price for a DPF for your car as this would get rid off all of your black smoke once it's fixed.

    Can't see one though.

See how much Audi will charge for one.

    Hi,

Surely any car would smoke if you pump through it a load of fuel(boot it), however this should be adjusted by the onboard computer system that should compensate for more fuel injected into cylinders and thus allow adequate air into cylinders as well.

I would personally keep watch at the rear view mirror, and if the smokind is persistent after a few thousand miles then there is definately some imbalance in mixture being combusted.
