    Hi All,

A few weeks ago I arrived home in the Golf and I couldn't get it into reverse to park it; it wouldn't go back into 1st either. I left it and returned an hour later and it was OK.

A couple of days later I was parking it in a car park and the same thing happened.

The next week, I'd just got on the motorway and it started to make a noise when the accelerator is lifted (during acceleration it's OK). It's not really a 'grinding' noise but similar.

The noise sounds for about a few tenths of a second and repeats continuously at a interval of about 0.3 seconds (depending on the speed and gear selected) - the timings are pure guesses but you get the idea .

I took it to a local garage and he said "new gearbox, £1000".
The underneath of the gearbox (DUU) is very oily.

Does anyone think the symptoms could point to it needing a new gearbox? Or could it be something less expensive . It has done 110k miles.

Your thoughts welcome - the car is sat in the garden and I've bought a sub-£1000 Saab (which has its own probs) until the Golf gets better .

    Cheers!

sounds to me like it could well be another case of the dreaded DUU box.
    Its all about the balance....
