My sharan failed mot today , on :

    1.Hole in catalic
2.Immsions ( due to hole in cat )
    3.Offise rear coil spring incomplete

GFS do the the cat for £79 and the spring for £59

Now the rear spring is proably DIY do-able , but the cat , without raising im not so sure ,

Has anyone changed a cat DIY without raising the car ??

Local exhaust and tyres place wants £185 fully fitted to do the cat , is it a case of biting the bullet and letting them fit it ?

    Advice welcome

Hi Paul, I think that if you unbolt the downpipe from the turbo, then go under the car and loosen the clamp from the CAT to the sleeve fit mid section, after removing it from the exhaust hangers you 'may' possibly be able to remove the CAT & flexi-pipe through the engine bay.

Then it is easy to remove the CAT from the front pipe.

Be careful not to bend the flexi-pipe.

    ini thx reply , m8

Ive been out and under , sure enough there is a lovely hole about 5mm wide in my cat ,

Will this cause it to fail emissions then ?? , i dam hope so lol ,

Anyway i can see all bolts , the U clamp holding to the center section comes off no problem , but the front 3 bolts holding the cat to the down pipe are really corroded , i can t even get a socket on the head of one its so bad, and lying on your back is difficult too !!!

    Think I need a hoist , with a hoist its a 20 min job , dam !!!!

I will try a few local garage who will fit , if i supply the part ,, it cant be no more than 1hr labour max , at say £45ph thats still only £125 as opposed to £185

Dont attempt the bolts when the CAT is on the car.

If possible, remove the downpipe and CAT as one section, then it is much easier to free the CAT.
