marcus_asparagu's post about the chrome grill has made me think - his parking sensor is in the chrome part of the grill:

    Mine is here:

Did VW change it's placement from one iteration to the next - or is mine an aftermarket one? I don't have a button to enable/diable it near the Traction control button, I might add....

(PS, I do, actually, love it and I now can't park a Passat without it )

Factory-fit sensors on mine are also in chrome and colour-coded on the bumper:

...and, though I reveal myself as a total no0b to parking sensors, massively unhelpfully over-sensitive when driving forward into a narrow-ish parking space, 'cus they go off from the sides and don't let you know when the front is nearly in...

My First VW Passat this year had them as a factory fit (08 in January)

VW replaced my car following ing sensors braking problems.

Retro fitted includes display mounted front and rear very useful

I suspect that mine are retro (dealer) fit in that case - I don't have to worry too much about the side warning at the front, but it's a PITA when parked up against a hedge - like I do at work!

why they can't do what Skoda have on all of theirs I'll never know! How hard can it be to have the display (and have audio dipped in volume too)?

Mine is part bumper, part grill, so factory fit too. The lack of button should give it away James!

I didn't know that there was a button that turned it on and off - plus, aren't front sensors the non-standard as far as sensors go - aren't they normally rear fitted only?

well I think seeing as VW offer it as an option, it must be factory fit. To be honest, I don't use the fronts at all, but on the estate, the rears are invaluable.

Still didn't stop me reversing into a low wall, but that is another story ...

Certainly for 2007 onwards (the earliest Brochure I've seen...), factory-fit sensors are front & rear. Your choices are nothing at all or both front & rear.

As has been pointed out, if it is factory or dealer fit (i.e. VW-supplied), then there's a poorly-iconed[1] button to the right of the gear stick to manually disable or enable the sensors. As far as I know, they only come on automatically when reverse is engaged; you need to push the button to turn 'em on if driving forward into a space. I think they automatically switch off if you change gear...

[1] = I can't say "labelled" because it's a picture. But the funny little P-with-bars-on icon didn't say "parking sensors" to me. If anything it said "dump contents of honey tank to road.....".

Hmm, I've no such button anywhere.... Front sensors are sometimes rather sensitive and have been known to come on at speed (when hooning through the countryside...)

I'd like to see what icon says "dump contents of honey tank to road" though
