    Hi all,

This is my first post. Just purchased an audi a4 tdi 130bhp se 2002 model. Car has been smoking white on startup and misfiring. VAGCOM shows cylinder 1 misfire. I thought it was the injector until i managed to speak to company driver who owned the car and he informed me that he drove into a large puddle and it sucked in water which caused the conrod to bend and hence the smoke.

So it looks like i need a new engine or secondhand one at that. my engine code is awx (5speed 130bhp). Will the engine code AVF (only on 6 speed passats and a4's work with mine) as they both are 130bhp.

Can i not just buy any tdi pd 130 (golf lump) as surely the lump would be the same and just change everything over. Is it possible.

    Kind Regards

    Jason

Golf engines etc are no good as they are transverse mounted and hence will never fit an A4 which is fitted the opposite way.

You need the same engine code as you already have to ensure it will fit, You 'might' be able to adapt a passat engine but far less hassle to find an A4 motor.

Why not replace the bust con-rod and valves in your current engine?

It may make more sense to repair the original but you have to factor in the high labour costs. AVF and AWX units are the same across VW, Audi and Skoda but 2004 onwards are different. A full exchange engine from VAG is £3400 inc. VAT and is complete with injectors, belt, w/pump etc and is extraordinarily good value if you look at the sum of its parts, four injectors alone cost nearly £2k.

If you're a capable mechanic, I would try and fix the old one. It would be far less hassle and it would be quicker than searching for another AWX and then fitting it. A good AWX engine is really hard to find because most of the 130s were 6 speed, therefore AVF.

Mine has an AWX, but that hasn't broke, touch wood.

AVF and AWX base unit engines are identical in every way. If you order either, they come as the same part number. In fact the only differences I know of between the two are the flywheel/clutch and the ECU.
