    Hi

I'm really new to this forum - got a couple of questions about a Mk4 golf.

I apologise in advance for knowing absolutely nothing about golfs..
I am very comfortable workin on my rover 25 so when my brother asked me to have a look at his golf I thought I'd give it a go. mistake.

It keeps cutting out. I've checked that all the airways are ok and had a general look round the engine. I took the pipe from the left hand side of the air filter box and there was "sludge" in it! I don't know how else to describe it. Doesn't look normal to me. What's the pipe for and what does it go into at the back of the engine?

Also, your thoughts on the engine cutting out would be great..

    Thanks
    Andy

    Thanks for your reply

    It's a 1.4 16v petrol

I'll try and find the engine code later today.

By “cutting out” do you mean literally losing all power when driving along or stalling when dipping the clutch and coming up to a junction? Does it re-start straight away or do you have to wait?

The engine stalls at junctions if you take your foot off the gas. It starts again straight away.

Think I'm gonna change the fuel filter tonight and see if theres any improvement.

Waste of time, if the fuel filter was blocked it would limit your power under acceleration, what you have is a dirty throttle body that needs removing, cleaning and then resetting with VAG-COM or similar.
