hi all, just a poll, should you get your car rfom a dealer or a private sale
I got my 55 reg 140 tdi 2 months ago from a main dealer of luxury cars in wakefield. ( cant say the name yet)
I spent the first and second week of ownership tryint to get someone to take notice of the problems i was having. the guy i got it from didnt return one of my 10 calls.
Eventually I got ****** with their attitude and took it to my main dealer, he diagnosed a stuffed injector and pump. i called the service manager at the place i got it from and he said no chance very unlikely that both parts could be stuffed , the sales man said this was just hearsay and to bring it in to them.

any how they took the car back and their vw main dealer mates have diagnosed a pump and injector fault.( approx £1100)
thats the last time i purchase a second hand car from a luxury car main dealer in wakefield.

they now say all the parts are on back order but my dealer in derbyshire has them in stock. bunch of steallers.

next job is to write to thei head office

It'd depend on the car I suppose - I'd always try to buy within MFR warranty period, but if not, I'd consider a third party one - when buying private, of course.

As for the selling retailer - I'd get all "trading standards" on them... I posted this to Grandmaster80 recently which should help. Basically, if the car is not fit for use, you can reject it under the sale of goods act - take no sh** from the selling retailer. If needs be, drive it there and leave it with a recorded letter with a statement of intent. Try to get a letter from the dealer stating exactly what the problem is and give that to the retailer too.

The sale of goods act will help you out here - as you've had the car for such a short period of time, then the seller has to underwrite a reasonable warranty period - I think the time period is 3 months. If the car was a knackered old Fiesta, then that would be different.

Given that the fault happened so quickly, the fault clearly existed at time of purchase, then you should be covered in the eyes of the law.

    Will help.

(If you got it on finance, this will help - http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/x-ray/x_g...car1-1-8.shtml)

I'd approach VW first to see if they'll offer goodwill - They might as mentioned above if the car has FVWSH....

If no-one helps, I'd consider talking to trading standards as they are very helpful.

And yes, I've done all this before - but the nay-saying trader caved as soon as I formally involved trading standards.

As I said then, and I mean it now, good luck - personally, I'd reject the car and threaten legal action.

Some very good advice from JTW. Luckily i've never had to go down this route (touch wood) but it's good to know.

Thanks - I've had to go down this route before and knowing all this was a must.

Note that you get none of this with a private sale....
