I have a Passat 1.8T 2001 (35,000 mile) my problems have started since the car overheated on Christmas eve. The thermostat was replaced , this did not cure the problem , so next was the water Pump. This was replaced onlong with the cam belt , tensioner etc etc. Since that time the ABS warning light stays on and also the handbrake warning light (red exclamation mark). The mechanics that carried out the work stated this was caused by the front wheels rotating (whilst the engine was warmimg up and front of car jacked up) and the rear wheels still stationary , causing the ABS ECU to throw a wobbly. They tried various resets but still the same fault. I am now awaiting a VAG diagnostic result.

Has anybody come accross this type of issue before? or am I looking at an ECU failure ? If I need a replacement can I buy a refurbished unit as VW brand new is over £600

The problem wasn't there when you took the car in originally so they have caused this.If they knew warming the car up with the front wheels off the ground would throw a code then why did they do it?Don't let them fob you off.I would suspect water damage to the ABS ECU as this is situated closely to the thermostat, water may have rushed out the block soaking the ABS ECU in warm (ish) coolant.Try dis-connecting the ABS ECU at the pump and look for any dampness/moisture in the connections,if there is point this out to them.you could try dis-connecting the battery(make sure you have the radio code first)then re-connect after some time say 1/2 an hour, see if this helps,it's like a re-boot for all the electrics in your car.hope this helps, cheers Calum

    Hi ,

My problem is resolved - the ABS ECU was replaced for the 2nd time (presume the first recon unit was duff) all lights on the dash board are now correct. The symptom was VAG COM test equipment showed no connection to ABS ECU. As a note loooking at American forums the ABS ECU failure is very very common and the US requested a recall , as so many failures. My advice is to get a refurbished unit as it is as least half price (£350 !!)
many thanks to you all - I have now placed an order for a Seat Leon lt FSI with 3 yrs warranty !!!

In the end this was the fault with mine, they fitted a new ABS module, but it still showed the fault, and could not be coded, the original was refitted and the car taken to a 'decent' VW dealer, who followed the correct procedure for entering the codes, end result.......... Success.
