    Hi,

I have got a 1998 PASSAT 1.8T SE 20V, and having some trouble with the central locking.

Everything works (lock/unlock) fine from the key fob, but when I try to lock the doors from the drivers door panel nothing happens . Unlocking the doors from the drivers door panel seems to work because I can hear the sound of the motors from the doors, but since I couldn't get them lock in the first place from the inside, I am not able to confirm this for sure.

    So my questions are,

    1. Any idea what is wrong?
    2. Can I manually push the knob on the drivers door to lock all doors? or will this break anything in the mechanism?

    3. Once I unlock the car using the key fob and get in the car, and start the engine , are the doors supposed to lock automatically? if it is supposed to, it doesn't happen on mine either.

Hope someone can help me on this, and thanks for your replies.

    Regards,
    Dj

What you are saying is that when you are in the car, and you press the lock button on the grab handle drivers side door, nothing happens yes? But when you press unlock something whirrs away yes?

Quickest thing would be to take the door panel of, after removing the grab handle and see if everything is properly connected. There are two screws at the bottom of the door card which you remove and card sort of pulls of.

Manually pushing the lock button on the drives side door will cause no damage.

    3. what you are talking about is anti hijack, it can either be done at the factory when car was new, or afterwards using vagcom, takes about 5 secs to do

Depending on where you live, there may be someone local to you, who has vagcom, and may do it for you.

Yes, this is exactly the problem.

Thanks for your reply. Will have a look at the connections and post if I find anything. I was just wondering whether this could be caused by a burnt fuse?

It could very well be, no harm in checking, open drivers side door, on the end of the dash, there is a small panel that bulges out, remove it, fuses are in there, you should have a card in there aswell which tells you what fuse does what, have a look.
