    Hi All,

New to the forum and to VWs but finally bought a Mk2 like I always wanted however it has only a 4 speed box fitted.

Is this the correct box for the car?

I thought that the Gti's were all 5 speed but I don't know much about Golfs so I could well be totally wrong.

According to the ad it has a ACD gearbox? and a PB Digifant engine.

It needs a bit of work doing as when I was on my way home the clutch broke and the gear change is very very sloppy. It's booked into the garage but they can't look at it for a week.

Anything you can tell me would be helpful

I'm going to get the gear linkage changed to see if that will let me get into 5 gear as in another vwmk2 forum people were talking about the gear linkage giving problems with 5th gear.

I think I've got a 020 box fitted as it has the round cap at the wheel end. I still can't tell if it's the correct box for the car though. The clutch cable is a manual adjusting one.

After a bit of a play around with the linkage I've found the elusive 5th gear!

The gear stick had been set up so far to the right that it wouldn't go into gear. When this was set up correctly you could (mostly) get it into 5th. I've now had a new clutch fitted but the gearbox was badly worn and leaking oil so I've had that fully rebuilt and the linkage rubber grommets replaced at the same time.

the linkage helped but if it's crunching in 2nd then it's new box time / rebuild time as the syncro will be worn out.
It could just be that the bit labled 3 in the picture is not done up right.

The linkage bits are cheep enough from GSF and for 5th gear it could be the short connecter
Got some part numbers in this link and a bit of a guide:
