Hey, i currently own a golf 1.6SE 16v. I love the car, i thinks its great but unfortunately i will be giving it to another family member next year(long way away but aye no harm in planning). So i was thinking about buying another golf after the 'giving away' process. My question is which golf would you 'VW enthusiasts' recommend?? Has to be less than a 2 litre so reli 1.9 or 1.8 but which model because i heard to get a 1.9 is the best golf to buy!?!?!? If you could reply this would be helpful!!!

p.s. MK4 models ONLY! MK5s look like peugeots!

    Thank You
    Jay!

The 130bhp TDI is generally considered to be the best diesel in the MK4 range, the 150bhp version is not meant to be as reliable and is more prone to turbo failure.

It depends on what sort of driving you do. I looked at a 1.9 GT Tdi 130 BHP and a 1.8 T 150 BHP petrol. I do about 10k miles a year and I bought my car for £4800 with 46k on the clock (it has heated leather climate control and 6CD changer too ) for a similar spec'd diesel it would have cost about £7000

With the price difference in fuel of 10p per litre between petrol and diesel and the difference in MPG (53 ish for diesel 36 ish for petrol) I worked out that for it to save me money I would have to keep the diesel for about 5 years. So I bought the petrol as petrol's are much more fun to drive in my opinion (and quieter also!)

oooo kl thanks...I'm not sure now lol. I was just going to really consider the 130bhp tdi but now i might have to look into the 1.8. I also read a review on Top Gear that the best golf models are the TDi's and the Petrol's aren't very good?!?!?!

I've had many petrol golf's.and a mk 4 2.0 gti which was a bit bland to be honest for a golf.I have a 110 gt tdi mk4 and am well pleased with it,the 1.8 golf's can be prone to coil pack failure's but all golf's have niggling faults like window regulators, rear wiper failure, rear axle bushes, and the dreaded limp mode on the diesels.
If you go for a diesel get a good spec one with plenty of history and receipts for work carried out.I'm biased towards diesel as you can gert similar performance to a petrol but more MPG !

You might be able to get similar performance to the petrol models on paper, but I garentee that they are not worth the premium price tag.

Also my petrol 1.8 T is much more fun to drive than a diesel!! (not to mention quiet)

1800 quid converts it to LPG... all the fun of a petrol and 55p/litre
