    Hi,

I was hoping for some tips to improve the fuel economy off my car.

I have a 2004 A6 1.9Tdi (130) Sport (6 gears) with 60k miles. It has a FSH and is in excellent general condition.

for the last 10 years I have had Audi/VW Tdi/'s and always had excellent fuel economy and was expecting 47-49mpg from this A6. Which I think is reasonable.

37 mpg - when I first got the car
39 mpg - after Audi replaced the exhaust gas sensor under warranty
42 mpg - after I checked and improved the tyre pressure

Although it is only a difference of 5 - 7 mpg the costs can add up.

Any tips on how this could be improved (to save on fuel costs)?

    Thanks

    Bob

Lighter shoes perhaps ?! Winter diesel does not give the same Mpg as summer one, changing filters might help as well.

I have a similar model but with the Multitronic gearbox. I find the fuel economy is remarkable when driven gently and progressively with a light right foot. One thing I would suggest is a change of air filter. I had mine changed by the dealer and the difference in engine responsiveness was instantly noticeable. With regard to tyre pressures, I am currently running 30 psi on the front and 28 on the rear, which seems to give the same degree of "Squash" of the tryres, front and rear. Its a compromise for ride comfort. Running at 34psi all round is nodoubt better for economy, but the ride is rather "Bone shaking".

    Hi,

    Thanks for the replies.

The 42mpg is from me driving as carefully as I can economically with a light right foot.

the car was supposedly services before I received it but I might look into replaing the air filter and see if that makes a difference.

    Cheers

    Bob

    Hi

I have just bought an A6 Avant 1.9 TDI(130) SE 2002 with 112K miles. We've only had it two weeks, but the trip is averaging 47mpg, so we're really pleased and that's mostly short journeys of 10 to 20 miles. Obviously we haven't done a full tank refill and worked out the true mpg yet, but it's looking promising. Hope you have luck increasing yours - with the pump prices every mpg counts!

    cheers

Mines doing 45mpg, 50:50 split motorway and town driving. Needs a service soon, so it should increase once serviced.

It has been suggested to me that the Mass Airflow Sensor could be deteriorating as it can happen slowly. Has anyone come across this? I had one replaced on my last diesel but it was clearly faulty – it is less obvious this time.

Getting 51 average out of mine (although has had a remap).

Are you going by what the DIS computer says? Have you reset it and started again from fresh? Have checked the true consumption via the brim tank method?

It might be that the DIS needs recalibrating?

    Thanks for the reply,

51mpg sounds good. Im using the 'tank to the brim method' so should be getting an accurate figure.
