Hi i am a new member on here looking for some help.I have a Audi A6 1998 model 1.8T.I was driving down the motorway when the red oil warning light came on.I had checked the oil level the same day and it was nearly full on the dipstick.I put a small amount of oil in and went to carry on driving and the oil level light came on again after a minute. When i popped the bonnet again there was oil spashed all over mainly near the bottom of the car and a small knocking/rattling noise.I got the AA out and he said it could be a oil pressure problem or something to do with the pick up pipe being blocked?
I believe this could be a big job ie dropping the subframe?
Could the engine be knackered hence the small knocking/rattling noise?
Any help would be greatly appriciated.

These engines are known to block the pick up strainer in the sump. That said, if the oil is spraying out over the engine bay, would sound like a major oil leak causing you to loose the oil pressure.

Check oil feed pipes to turbo, filter, oil cooler etc.

Thanks for that lonky you were spot in.The pick up strainer was blocked, there was a leak to the turbo, plus oil pump was on the way out.Unfortunatly it's a big job,ie drop the subframe to get to the sump etc....

The cost with parts and labour with other little jobs thrown in comes to £800.This was the only garage that would touch it(apart from audi who would of charged a lot more).
I must be mad to get it done but i love my Audi even though it's 10 years old.Saying that though this will be the last time i will be spending money on it apart from MOT's.
    Famous last words!!!!

    Glad to be of assistance.

On the bright side, £800 does not sound a bad price for the work with the parts. Make sure they clean the engine down afterwards, so you can monitor to ensure the leak is fixed.

Hopefully you will have many more miles of happy motoring afterwards.

I always recommend a max of 5K between oil changes, as I am convinced that though the oil can apparently take 10K on these engines, it does tend to sludge up as it gets near the end of it's life which can lead to the stainer getting blocked. Turbo cars are always the worst as the turbo bearings run so hot.

I'd agree with lonky, 5k max between oil changes and be sure to use synthetic oil from here out. I had the exact same problem and apparently, the only way to avoid a build up of more sludge and gunk on the strainer is to use fully synthetic oil. BTW, i got the oil light at 74000 miles (A6 1.8T).
