150,000 miles on clock, full service history.
Intermittant problem with multitronic box. Start engine, P indicated. Change to reverse and PRND shown without any highlight. Car will not move. No change to display when Neutral or Drive selected. Display does not change to numbers if Tiptronic selected.
Try again without turning off and maybe gear selected okay (was able to drive onto breakdown truck!).
No strange noises, no fluid leaks, no warning lights.
Dealer quoted £1000 for new control box. £3500 for new gearbox and controller. Is a repair possible? Any other suggestions?
Is there an automatic transmission specialist company in Oxford area?

    thanks

    Dom

    Thanks shabazmo,

I spoke to John at Inde-tech, he was very helpful and understood my problem. he confirmed that the approach the dealer suggested is sound. The prices he gave me were about 10% less than Audi Aylesbury. However, although they are specialists they would replace, rather than attempt to repair the components. So, the fact that the dealer has loaned a car to me (S3 5,000 miles) until the repair is done, means I am sticking with them.

If I did not have such a good relationship with the dealer I would have used Inde-tech.

Interesting to hear someone else has experienced this problem. Our A6 2.5 TDI multitronic (03 reg), 78,000 miles, full service history suddenly developed the symptoms you experienced. To cut a long story short we took Audi on and ended up with some small compensation. My suspicion is that it might have something to do with the gearbox oil - could be that the incorrect grade has been added during the servicing - I read in a German car magazine that this had happened to some owners there.

Pretty expensive problem to encounter - seems very rare though

    Not that rare.

My 2003 A6 SE TDi 2.5 Quattro 180 does this on a fairly regular and predictaable basis.

Worried me the first time it happened and nearly had the arage out to tow etc.

But it only ever seems to do it when you hurry the gear change and don't really press the brake pedal down. Usually as a result of a reverse closely after a forward gear just after starting.

If I switch off, wait a few seconds it always clears itself.

    So far anyway!

The car is under a full parts and labour warrenty for 3 years so really I should get it looked at - but, I have done 7500 miles since the fault first showed itself and put the gearbox into safety mode.

I had a very similar fault on my previious X5 - bu that time no warrenty and BMW agreed to split the cost as it was not a fualt I could have done anything about. Still cost me >£2000 for a new gearbox. Differenvce was that there were no gears at all and no amount of switching off an on would change that. Turned out that the gear oil was fried inside and not an electrical fault as i had hoped / expected.

    If I come to
