I have just connected up to my A4 (B6) for the first time with VAG COM (409 shareware) and done a couple of fault scans on different control modules. When I went into 03-ABS Brakes there was a beep and "BRAKES" flashed up on the DIS (giving me a slight brown trousers moment I must admit!)

I did a fault scan and it found no faults, then when I exited the module the DIS went back to normal and all appears to be fine. Should this concern me, or is it to be expected?

    Thanks!

It does that to warn you its not working while its in diagnostic mode.

Yeah, it's totally nothing to worry about. I recall having a similar brown trouser moment when I first did it on my Golf

When I do a full scan on a car I often wander off as it is a bit boring, I have lost count of the number of times the customer has run over with arms a flapping and brown stains on their pants going “arghh, the ABS light is flashing and it’s beeping, oh God, oh God I’m pooing myself!”. People do tend to panic when it involves cars and money.

I'm coming to this a bit late as we've only just bought a '97 A4 TDi Quattro.

On a journey south through France, hundreds of miles from home, the glow plug light started flashing. Bit worrying, and a quick flick through books of words suggested this was due to an 'engine management fault'... Hmmm.

I couldn't feel anything wrong and no other alarms, alerts or warnings were displayed. The light stopped flashing shortly after.

On the way back from France the bulb out light was displayed and this proved to be the two outer brake lights that weren't working - the centre light worked fine. This time it was around midnight, pouring with rain and we were just off the ferry at Newhaven, still a couple of hundred miles from home. No real choice but to press on, and shortly after the warning light went out and the brake lights started working correctly again. They're still fine.

I've checked the brake light switch (looks like its the earlier type) and I'm sure it needs adjusting so I'll try that before investigating further. Any comments? Any advice welcome!

Thanks - didn't realise they were so reasonably priced.
