    Good morning.

I have a 1997 A4 avant 2.6 ABC that I'm looking to change the thermostat on, and am wondering if anyone could tell me whether it is possible to remove the thermostat without removing/disturbing the cam belt?

Thanks in advance for your help.

You will need to remove cambelt in order to replace thermostat. Is the car overheating ? I suggest you check watter pump first, as the impaller is made of plastic and they are known to fail/spin on the shaft ! I offer a cambelt replacement for about 300 pounds and includes new water pump(Meyle/KWP with metal impeller), Contitech cambelt + tensioner(Littens), Contitech auxiliary belt and AC belt as well. I am based in N. London, but i can travel to you if within reasonable distance ! Regards, Chris-07789912128.

    Hello Chris
Thank you for the quick reply and the offer to carry out the work.

The car is running a bit cool, 75degrees most of the time but does go to 90 after a long drive. This is what is making me think that it is the thermostat.

The waterpump, belts and tensioner and viscous coupling were all replaced 12 months ago by the previous owner but he ignored the thermostat which is handy!.

I currently have the lock carrier set to the service position but haven't removed the serpentine belt yet and was hoping that i could get away with replacing the thermostat without buying the cam timing tools.

    Thanks again for your help

    Jason
