I'm approaching a service in around 2000 miles. She was last serviced 10,000 miles ago (oil change) so according to the service book, she is now due a 20k service. After speaking to a VW Specialist, this will consist of an oil change, oil filter, diesel filter, air filter, pollen filter & brake fluid change. This would cost around £200 at a vw specialist. How much should I expect to pay for this type of service? Obviously, the specialist will be cheaper than a dealership, but I can't help thinking, it's a little steep, especially as the service kits can be purchased from ebay for around £30 tops. Up until now the car has a FSH, mainly dealerships and a few specialists after that. I think the glow plugs will need replacing too as the light remains on for a few seconds instead of going out immediately. These can be picked up from reputable ebayer sellers for around £12 per set.

What would you do in my shoes?? do it yourself? find a specialist? Does anyone know of a good specialist in the wiltshire or the north west (carlisle, cumbria) area? I will be in Swindon up until around the 14th of Jan.

Oh yeah, I was hit by a white van man yesterday whilst driving, twice in 4 months now!! Do me a favour and give a 2 finger salut the next time you see a white van man!! I know we shouldn't tar them all with the same brush.....but I've had enough!

    BTW - It's a 1997 Passat TDi sport 110 - approaching 160k

If you handy with the spanners i would do the work myself. The polen filter does not need changing so often unless you alergic to polen. Just replace oil filter, oil(would choose fully synthetic 0w40 or 5w30) and dont worry about fuel and air filters as they are good up to 40k miles. All filters and oil will be 50-60 pounds and will take about 1-2 hours to complete even for the most novice DIY mechanic. And by fitting fully synthetic motor oil your car's engine will be best protected. Dont replace the glow plugs as they are supposed to be on for a short period of time to help the engine start easilly. I would replace them only if the car will have trouble starting when cold !!!! Merry X-mas !
