Broken Rear Coil Spring

Hello

My 2002 Golf GTi 2.0 has just failed it's MOT due to a broken rear spring. I have a replacement and am looking at the Haynes Manual and it seems like a fairly simple job to replace it (either using a spring compressor or not ).

Can anyone give any advice on just how simple or difficult this is before I start work? Any suggestions to make the job easier?

Hello

I have now replaced the broken spring and found that, actually, it was remarkably easy. It took just over 1 hour to replace one spring using spring compressors. I did not attempt to try it without the compressors (as described in the Haynes manual) so cannot comment on this method.

So if you have a broken rear coil have a go yourself - much quicker and cheaper than taking it in for repair.

Support the axle on one side under the spring plate, remove both damper lower bolts, unclip the ABS wires, lower the axle down and remove the springs.

I've never come across a car that you can't do without compressors as most cars hold their suspension under some tension at all times

most cars with a rorsion beam rear axle and springs that are seperate to the shocks are easy to do springs,it gets more complicated when you have integral springs/shocks as in the audi a4/passat/vectra and any other car that uses integregated springs that you need spring compressors
