Newbie-Some Advice on tickover/Starting Problem

Hi all

Just joined the forums really to get some advice on a running problem with a little Polo in the family. I've no real knowledge of Vdubs and this is the first I have ever really come across so here goes:

Polo 1 litre p-reg manual 5spd

Changed oil and cleaned out spark plugs, carb flap and rotor cap and ever since had problem with tickover and starting:

When driving it and changing gear the revs stick up at about 1500-2000 RPM and don't come down, this was prevalent right after service. As soon as the car is brought to a stop the revs seem to recover to normal tickover in two stages over say 5-7 secs, 1st stage down to about 1300 then to just under 1000rpm.

I done the service about a week and a half ago and yesterday, when I went to start her, it started then died. it done this 6 times before starting!!

Funnily enough the engine is actually running better than it used to; it's just this tickover and now starting malarky I can't figure out.

Any advice and forethought would be appreciated before I get delved into it over the weekend....

Did you mess up the timings? Rotar arm and distributor so cheap you might as well replace not clean.
