    I believe we already have a general forum user guide listing some commonly used forum abbreviations aimed at general chat and banter so I'm starting this post to try and get all the automotive abbreviations in one place.

    To kick us off, we'll go with the most popular ones seen on a daily basis

    MAF - Mass air flow sensor - also called a myriad of other letters.

    HID - High Intensity Discharge - when talking about automotive bulbs

    and so on

    Post them up or ask what they mean.

    Some off the top of my head:

    ABS - Anti-lock Braking System

    ESP - Electronic Skid Protection

    PCD - Pitch Circle Diameter, in relation to wheel nuts spacing

    DMF - duel mass flywheel.

    EGR or N18 - exhaust gas recirculation (valve)

    MAP - manifold apsolute pressure (sensor)

    TPS - throttle position sensor (your throttle pedal on later cars, fitted in engine comp on early cars)

    N75 - solenoid valve that controls the EGR (see above)

    N75 - ALSO solenoid valve that controls turbo vanes (TDI) or wastegate (1.8t)

    N239 - Inlet manifold change over flap (TDI's)

    V7 - Radiator fan

    G62 - Coolant temp sensor




    There are loads and loads.

    Generally on VAG group cars (as above) the following applies;

    Motors are prefixed V
    Solenoids and actuators are prefixed N
    Sensors are prefixed G

    TC- Traction Control.

    ESP- Electronic Stability Programme.

    EDL- Electronic Differential Lock.

    CD- Compact Disc.

    BHP- Brake Horse Power.

    4WD- 4 Wheel Drive.

    PAS- Power Assisted Steering.

    DIS- Driver Information System.

    EPC- Electronic Power Control.

    FSH- Full Service History.

    ABS - Absolute Bu.... ermm when my local garage told me that my engine was UNDER heating because I needed a new water pump.

    FSI - Fuel Stratified Injection (I think)

    AC - Air conditioning

    LPG - Liquid Petroleum Gas

    TDC - Top Dead Centre

    MPV - Multi Purpose Vehicle

    DSG - Direct Shift Gearbox

    DSC - Dynamic Stability Control

    CV joint - Constant Velocity (joint)

    ICE - In Car Entertainment

    and finally, I forget the acronym, but feel that I must mention the Association of Road Speed Enforcers.

    EW - Electric Windows
    HB - Hatch Back
    CC - Cubic Capacity (1968cc)
    Sal - Sallon
    Est - Estate
    RC - Radio Cassette
    4x2 - looks like a 4x4 but is not (Toyota Hilux can be 4x4 or 4x2)
    PD - Pompe Duse (2.0TDI 140PD)
    CRD - Common Rail Diesel
    CC - Coupe Convertable
    GT - Gran Tourer
    CL - Central Locking
    5sp - 5 Speed Gear Box (6sp, 7sp and so on)
    LED - Light-Emitting Diode

    UUUMMM!!!!!

    I agree. What's wrong with the old fashioned estate car? Get an Audi Allroad instead in my opinion.
