    Hi all,

Im currently having problems with my V reg golf which has 67k on the clock which Ive owned since new. I was out in the car yesterday when i changed into 2nd gear and accelerated past 3000 revs it sounds like the clutch is depressed ie it revs up but the speed doesnt increase. There is also what sounds like a loud clicking noise when I reverse the car, almost like something is rubbing against one of the wheels not too sure if its related but would appreciate your advice!!
The car is only just back from the garage after being serviced!

    Thanks in advance!

Yep - dead clutch. Get it looked at asap before it causes further damage

    Hey there Wooldog !
    I am having a similiar problem with my Mk 4 VW Golf 1.6 16v ( 2001 ) 48,000mls.
When in reverse, there is a terrible whining noise which seems to be coming from the back of the car. It's almost like the handbrake is engaged and is rubbing on the back discs.
Have had it in to my local garage, the fella who owns it is an ex VW Tech, who reckons there is nothing wrong with it ??????
I want to be able reversing into a parking space without everyone turning their heads and going what the f*ck !!Thats my rant finished !
Hope you get your problem sorted.

    Mark.

    Hi Wooldog
I had a similar problem with my Golf 1.4 Mk4 T reg 65K + just before christmas (great timing) hope yours is not the same i had the revs thing going on, Thought it was the clutch BUT ended up being a hole in my gearbox when the garage took a look it was dripping oil on to my clutch making it slip. Thus I then needed a new gearbox and clutch as the clutch was contaminated as they put it A Lot of Dosh I am no machanic so i myself asked for advice on this forum i was told it is a common problem with 1.4 and i'm sure they said 1.6 gearboxs?and on different makes as in Skoda, Audi etc .Its the way they are put together bolt or revits ? if you search you may find it. I hope this helps and does not go off track in you cars case, with it being somthing simple but this may be a possiablity and is handy to be aware of before it goes in to the garage.

Aye - clutches, being friction devices, dont work too well when lubricated

I've had a clutch problem twice before and it's taken a while to "click" before I realised each time If you can get away with super slow clutch release but it does sod all on quick release you know it's stuffed.

I think the guy at the garage last time proved it by doing something like pulling the handbrake up, revving to 3K and then lifting the clutch in 5th. Loads of smoke and no stalling = screwed clutch.

Heard bac from the garage and its apparently a rivet that has snapped and got into the gearbox, this has caused a hole in the casing and resulted in the leaking oil which damaged the clutch. All in its looking like around £500-600 for the gearbox to get fixed and £300-400 for a new clutch.
    Doh!!

There is a less severe version of that that wont detroy the clutch if it was actually ok - handbrake on, in 1st, rev to 3k and test bite point, just stopping short of stalling, which in itself can bend the drive straps of the clutch.
