Found this site and had a good look round, I'm very impressed and now a convert.

    http://www.headlights247.com/

Have a look over there and read the lists of the countrys that have to use them, we are living in the 18th Century here.

    The thing I am most impressed with is this;

"Research shows that without your headlights on during the daytime, your vehicle is visible at a distance of only 2200 ft, but with headlights on, you can be seen as far as 4700 ft away, that’s more than double the distance; much more time for the oncoming driver to see your vehicle and make the driving decision that might save your life!"

About 2 months ago I very nearly was in a very nasty accident, I followed a arctic lorry for 16 miles on roads where it was very difficult to have a clear chance of overtaking unless you have a high power vehicle, I was in a Mercedes Sprinter van not a sloutch but not a Porsche either, the lorry driver didn't give a dam about anyone doing between 35-45 mph for 16 miles in a 60mph limit. The queue behind was horrendous not one vehicle managed to overtake the idiot until we saw what looked like a good spot, the car infront of me a BMW 5 series pulled out and was gone, I pulled out to follow being the next one behind the van was empty so was pretty quick and started to go quite nicely I also had the benefit of going down hill but it was at about 1/4 of the way by the lorry I saw a vehicle approaching VERY quickly straight at me there was no chance I would get by so I braked very hard to allow the lorry to overtake me on the inside so I could drop behind him but there was another car behind me which was also trying to overtake the lorry.
Very strange the car driver gave me full headlights along with a fist gesture, if he had his lights on WITHOUT A DOUBT I WOULD HAVE SEEN HIM AND NOT TRIED TO OVERTAKE.

That would have been very serious at best I was doing best part of 55mph and the car probably 60+mph.

Even after that it never occured to me but after looking around that site I am convinced it's the right thing to do.

I take my hat off to who ever owns that website and with more people viewing and changing their ways without any doubt whatsoever lives will be saved.

    Yes,

    You were very lucky there,

however, if its as dangerous as that maybe its best sometimes just to stay behind the lorry. I know its slow as hell, but be safe than sorry.

Over take of course if your 100% sure, its a straight road, completely nothing visable.

But, i understand if you cant see anyone, and suddenly they just appear then i just recommend being safe, going slow.

back in the seventies, five of us went fishing to ireland for the weekend. we missed the boat back! and so had an extra day to fill in as thier wasn't another ferry until the same time the next day!
anyway, we left in search of some fishing, and drove past "the curragh"
race course. a very straight road,as i remember, but just full of dips and blind
summits. a death trap in those days, don't know if it's changed any over the years.
you are all probably the same as i was in those days, out at work, away from the kids. i carried a pic of the kids on the dash.-the best reason to think twice.

Well good on you mate, what did it for me was the extra distance it makes by having them on and being seen.

Many people have idea's and do nothing others try but it doesn't work out well, it very obvious the amount of time and effort you've put in, what you have achieved is a site that is good enough to make people like me be interested enough to keep pushing the buttons and reading.
And because you have done such a great job it is easy to understand and make the difference.

I'm convinced by what you have shown that many lives can be saved if it was law here, any chance of you pushing it further getting votes from enthusiast sites like these would be an obvious choice the government really need to just stamp it the works already been done.

I'm going to put a link on some other websites I go on if you don't mind.

A single carriage way road, HGV's are limited to 40 mph by law on these even if the signs say 60. 60 is for anything up to 7.5 ton.

The HGV was law abiding and the queue shold show patience.

If there is a campaign over this, I am firmly in the "lights when they are needed camp", I don't wish to be blinded by numpties driving around on main beam during the day because they can't see the beam spread or the dash warning light. I don’t have a problem with the new breed of day driving LED's but making us drive around on a bright day in the middle of summer with our headlights on is nonsense. Also, speak to any biker and they will tell you it is a terrifying prospect for them. Another thing, in this age of trying to reduce fuel consumption, estimates suggest that making this law for all cars will increase the countries consumption of fuel by 4%.

I'm fully aware that the speed limit is 40 mph for HGV's but is it ethical to pass dozens of lay bys and never pull into any of them when there were traffic behind that were over a mile long? To me it's plain ignorance I'm a caravanner and have been for 25 years I also hold a HGV licence and I do not ever do what he did, when caravanning I usually pull in on the 2nd lay bye simply because I can easily gain my speed unlike when driving HGV I stop when I can see a queue behind me, if I do not I am not responsible it causes frustration which in turn causes accidents.
Aslo when driving HGV I never hold the centre lane of the motorway trying to overtake when I'm only going 1 MPH faster than the one in the inside lane, the muppets who drive like this care nothing but for themselves, I'm getting towards 50 now and in all the 30 years I've been driving I probably haven't lost 10 hours in time all added together by letting people by.
