I have an Audi A6 1.9tdi with auto transmission. On some ocassions the gear indicator on the dash board flashes on and of for no apparant reason. When the auto gear leaver is moved to a position it goes off. Sometime this can be several movements. The car drives perfectly well and the solid flashing light does not a indicate anything wrong. The only thing I have noticed is that when the light flashes the foot break when pressed does not make a little click.
Has anyone else had a similar problem? Do they know the cause?
    Thanks

On the DSG 'box this means there is an error somewhere within the gearbox which usually puts it either in a limp mode or shuts the gearbox down completely. I'd guess it means something similar on a standard auto, although if it does it must be something pretty minor in this case. I'd get it checked at a garage if I were you.

The simplest of the faults known to cause this is a faulty brake pedal switch. It has two contacts, one for the rear lights, the other for the gear box. If the gear box one goes intermitant then a fault can be displayed.

get the codes read, and it will clarify the situation. If it is the switch they cost no more than tenner, and are not hard to fit, as long as you are flexiable, and not too large a build !

Thanks lonky, do you know where the switch is and can you explain how to get to it and change it. I think you are right because when the gear indicator is flashing red, there is no little click from the foot brake, whereas when the gear indicator is flashing there is no little click. Thanks very much

Just a word of warning the brake switch has to be turned a full 90degrees after its inserted for the switch to work so make sure that this is done. It can be quite tricky. Also you need to turn the switch 90degrees opposite when taking thebold one off. Best of luck

the switch is accessed via the drivers footwell. Just remove the lower trim and you will see.

5 off bolts - two under clip off cover over steering column, two at the bottom and one via the fuse box I think you will find
