I have seen a few threads about this issue but I am pretty young and not so car savvy so I was wondering if anyone could help me out.

I just bought a mk3 golf gl '99 and it's been cutting out just as everyone has said.
My uncle is a VW enthusiast and said it was the ignition cables, so I got those replaced and the rpm is still fluttering when I am a stopped. It revs on it's own above and below idle line on the rpm gauge and then either stabilizes or dies. At this point I don't feel like I can go all hands in but I want to at least know what might cause this so I wont get screwed into paying too much money at a mechanic.

I already saw that it could possibly be:

air flow pipe that goes into the top of the engine and were it joins he just cleaned the butterfly switch

new ignition coil pack

or

rubber block mounting between carb and inlet manifold

if anyone has anything to add that could MAYBE be the problem let me know it could probably save me a lot of money.

PS. You guys have already been a great amount of help thanks
