    Hi all,

I am new here, and am thinking of buying a 1999/2000 Passat. I have two options, and I was wondering whether anyone here would be able to give me some info on the MPG on these cars.

    2000 Passat 1.8 T, Manual, with 18" Alloys
    1999 Passat 1.6, Manual

My main dilemma really is how much better the 1.6 might do compared to the 1.8T?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

    Regards,
    Dj

Well, Ive got a 1.8 petrol non turbo 1999, max Ive ever got out of a full tank is 338miles at £67, thats with shell optimax, with cheapo morissons fuel, fuel tank is £64 and max ever got from that is 311miles

I fill up as soon as red light appears, so I can probably get another 10miles by going into the red.

The 1.6 and the 1.8T have the same combined economy figures of 34mpg. Obviously the 1.8T has the capability to drain its tank much quicker than the 1.6.

I can easily achieve about 450+ miles on a tank of 95RON in my 1.8T. Thats 80% motorway driving at "around" the legal limit and 20% town. The 1.6 won't be much if any better than this but is flat as a pancake compared to the 1.8T.

Furthermore the 1.8T engines are much stronger internally than the 1.6 and as such are capable of running to far higher mileages without problems.

Thanks a lot for the replies,

I had the feeling that the 1.6 would not probably be more economical since it still had to shift the same weight anyway.

I think I would be looking for the 1.8 option. Any idea what kind of millage one of these engines can do before costly repairs or an overhaul? Assuming proper servicing has been done.

    They're good for 250k +. The 1.6 won't get anywhere close.

    hi ross,
get yourself an 1.8t,get it properly serviced by a garage that knows its stuff,as these engines can if not properly looked after be troublesome.
