I had this problem in an old polo coupe and never actually cured the problem fully. I had a feeling it was down to the wiring being split or open and rubbing somewhere thus triggering it off. It only appeared to happen when driving over uneven/rough surfaces. In the end got so cheesed off the fuses had to come out. Hope you get this fixed as i know how annoying it is!

Thats just typical. It was the same with me when i took it to my friends mechanic. Done it all the way there and as soon as I pulled into the guys yard the wipers parked and havn't done it since. But thats only 3 days ago so known my luck it wont be long before the problem returns!

Sorry to drag an old post up - but I now have this problem with my B5 passat. Wipers permanantly on unless rear wash/wipe is activated - then front wipers stop and the bloody rear wash wipe goes all the time!!

I have taken the rear was wipe fuse out, and that seems to have restored the functionality to the wiper stalk for the front wipers. Very annoying

    Thanks,
Nope - no info here forthcoming, so took the rear wiper fuse out. This has solved the problem but obviously no rear wiper
Let me know if you solve it please...

I had this problem in my golf....the rear washer was leaking inside the rear motor and must have been causing a short. Replaced the rear motor....problem solved!

The way I fixed the problem was by selling the piece of crap because I was sick to death of the car always going wrong. The bonnet near coming up while on the motorway was the last straw for me and it had to go. Worst car Ive ever owned and sure wont ever buy another VW after that.
