Audi A6 oil light warning

Hi i am a new member on here looking for some help.I have a Audi A6 1998 model 1.8T. I was driving on the motorway when the red oil warning light came on.I had checked the oil the same day and it was nearly full on the dipstick.I put a small amount of oil in and went to carry on driving and the light came on again after a minute.When i popped the bonnet there was oil splattered all over,and a small knocking noise.I got the AA out and he said it could be a oil pressure problem or something to do with the pick up pipe being blocked.
I believe this could be a big job ie dropping the sub frame? Could the engine be knackered hence the small knocking noise?
Any help would be greatly appriciated.
