Here's a good pub question for you all:

How many auto transmissions are over by you , compared to manual?

Reason is this; here, only the true die-hard VW fanatics drive manual and nothing else, we'll avoid a automatic transmission like the plague!

The common thought here is that on your side of the pond, you all but cut your teeth on a manual gearbox, and prefer it over anything else.

So--weigh in and set a old Yank right, eh?

Manual is the far more common transmission over here, i find
auto's duller than a dull fat girl. I just don't understand people who can't drive a manual
You may think I'm being helpful yet sarcastic, this is only because I feel I need to help you to help yourself in the future

Aye, manual is far more common. I drive manuals but now and again, I do love an automatic. The only thing is if you get an auto it has to be more than 2,500cc in my opinion. Reason I say this is because my Astra 1.6 auto is so slow, you kick it down a gear and just makes some noise instead of gaining speed.

My manual Audi is brilliant though, nice and easy gear changes.

Generally on this side of the pond most people go for manuals for better economy, that's what I did.

I've a niece who couldn't see what I liked about my 89 Jetta, hers being a auto slushbox, and mine being a GTI manual five, until she had to take mine while I replaced a outer CV boot on the driver's side.

Drove hers and it had the pickup of a 70-year-old tart!

First words out of her mouth when she came back with my Jetta:

    "Uncle Murphy, wanna trade cars?"
