    Hi Everyone,

I own a 2002 2 litre VW Bora and as I turned the engine on this afternoon the emissions warning light came on. Has anyone any idea what this might mean? ... and more importantly how much it is going to cost to fix. Any clues?

    Thanks,

    Graham.

    Hi GrahamT,

Who knows? EML's come on for all kinds of reasons, it could be a simple fault (VW's like to whinge about silly things), or it could be a little more complex. What does it run like?

    Hi Rob,

Car seems to be running fine. Do I need to take it to a VW Dealer or can any garage with a diagnostics machine cope with it? I only bought the car recently and my previous car was a 1989 VW Golf, no computer diagnostics needed you just had to look under the bonnet.

    Thanks,

    Graham.

Yes, any garage 'should' be able to cope with it, but that all depends on the garage does it not... You need to be aware that just because an ECU stores a fault code and description it does not necesserally mean that that is the problem.

So many garages tend to read a fault description and take it as gospel. FAULT CODES ARE NOT WHAT THEY SEEM

an all too common occurrence on mine... normally happens just after having driven up over a curb.
Happens so often that am convinced these cars ought to be sold together with fault code readers to check & clear such 'warnings'.

to be quite honest, if the car appears to be running without fault, id invest in a faul reader, after investigation, clear the current code(S) and monitor for any further occurences. im not sure about VW, but i know that FIAT logged codes self clear, after so many cycles if the 'fault' is no longer present.

My bora's exhaust emission warning light has been on today but the car is running fine. I don't want to get ripped off at the dealers because the mannual advises to take it to the dealer. Has any one else experienced this, is it expensive to fix, is it ok to run with it on etc etc. Could it be because my old car was a nissan patrol 3litre and the change in drive is what might have set it off. Any ideas that don't cost to much.?

My golf 1.6 fsi was 2 last april. just bought it and it was serviced before collection. epc light came on after a couple of days and then the emissions light not long after. took back in and the dealer said that the fsi engine was designed to work with super unleaded but can take normal unleaded. the difference can cause the lights to activate. i drove the car as normal and eventually the lights went off..... until now.!!. i'm selling my car tomorrow and the emission light has come back on.. 2 days after its first m.o.t. !!.which it passed no probs. wonder if there is a connection?.
