If you buy a used car from a used car dealer and then the car breaks down, ie needs repair, who has to pay the bill, the buyer or the dealer??
If car came with warranty and the bill came to more than what was covered, who pays??

I don't know if there are any set 'rules' as such on this one...its more that most places should do it as a goodwill gesture as obviously its not gonna be good for their reputation if you say to people you bought a car from there that then broke and they refused to help you.

Theres a really good advice helpline called 'Consumer Direct' (its a government run thing similar to citizens advice burea) if you google them and give them a call they can help you out with all sorts and tell you all your rights etc and they will advse you on who is liable for the bill.

When I bought my car..about 3 weeks later I was at matalan one day and it refused to start...i rang up the garage i bought it from and luckily as it had a free months warranty on it, the man sent out his mechanic and paid for the new ignition coil. Then another few weeks later we were away in norfolk and it started playing up again...it was out of the warranty period by this time but we had only had it about 7 weeks and i phoned him and said that the car we have part exchanged with this one, we had had for 3 years and it had never failed us whereas this one kept going wrong and i wasnt very happy atall. He agreed that once we were home his mechanic would again look at it, but it turned out we had no choice but to pay a garage in norfolk to fix it as it was actually dangerous to drive...it kept cutting out at junctions and on braking etc and obviously you cant drive on motorways with a car that keeps cutting out. Long story short..it was the map connector and was about a £160 bill so the garage we bought the car from gave us half...which was better than nothing as we did realise although we were cross, it was just one of those things so we were lucky he gave us anything towards it.

Its more a matter of priniciple...whats wrong with your car, how long have you had it and why doesnt the warranty cover it? I would give consumer direct a call and they will advise you what to do.

hope this helped a bit, sorry its so long!!

hold on before this gets blown way out of proportion have you contacted the supplying garage ??
have you asked them for help and how long have you had the car ...
also did anyone inspect the car before you bought it...
was the cars price negotiated ???
this all comes into consideration ??
no matter how you try you always come back to what you first started

I would have thought if the car is still under warranty, the cost of repairs should be covered, depending on type of warranty and nature of problem...

I had car for a month before it developed a problem, the garage have had it nearly 7 weeks now,
I personally inspected the car myself before purchase and it was fine, it had full service history.
As for the warranty, it is covered for engine repairs but only up to £250 per claim. However 1 of the bills they have got already is over this price. Who pays the difference in price? Do i have to pay?? Although i took it to the garage and told them to fix it, i didnt think it would cost this much, i wasnt asked if they could fit etc the parts + never mentioned about price. They are just doing what they see fit in regards to trying/ fixing problem.

"warranty" is just another word for "insurance", its not a guarantee as we wolud be led to believe.

read very carefully the terms and conditions of the warranty before shouting and screaming.

if it's a reputable dealer, i'm sure they will be able to help.

Citizen's Advice Bureau will be able to help/clarify what you are legally entitled to.

sorry it's not good news, and i hope you get it all sorted amicably

I believe it's down to you to pay the difference, the warranty people will clarify that. The problem I had recently was the warranty would only cover labour costs of up to £36 per hour. To avoid me forking out any difference, the independent dealer I bought my car from handled the repair work...bad move as I was without the car for a month, they bodged the job and have had the car in my local garage 3 times since. I wish I had let them do the work in the first place and just paid the difference, it would have saved me all the hassle....I've gone to trading standards about it. Hopefully the people you got your car from are ok, but just be wary

Are second hand dealers not supposed to give a 3 month warranty where as new car dealers have to give a year plus.

My gf bought a car and the fuel pump broke about 2 weeks later. The Dealer paid the price of the part but didnt put anything towards the labour etc.
