Does anyone know a way of cleaning the inside of the expansion tank so that you can see the level from the outside, instead of taking the cap off. Or is it a case of just buying a new tank?

Really it's gotta come off whatever you do, so I'd just buy a new one and throw the mucky bugger away!
Try for one being broken on ebay?

I might give the bleach or petrol a go, but Halfords said i'd have to wait 4 weeks for the semtex. Thanks for the suggestions, more are welcome though.

I reckon you could try baking soda and rice....
The rice is rough and will help remove the deposits.

I wouldnt spend money on it though... if that fails to work, buy a new one.

Try some crushed ice, shake it around in there and it may remove the muck
