    What is the torque difference.
According to Parkers, the 90 is considerably slower and not as economical as the 110!

What i said is that the 90 Hp is more ecconomical as the 110 hp. You cannot have better ecconomy with a more powerfull engine from the same year/model . Torque its direct proportional with horsepower and diesel engines have max torque at low rpms 1500-1900 rpms. The higher the torque, the quicker it accelerates from a stand still ! Horsepower gives you a higher top end speed !

Well Parker guide got it wrong with their mpg figures!
The performance figures are very different too. Nought to 60 2.5secs quicker in the 110.
I do most of my driving on country roads, so need to have plenty of go for over taking, you say that the 90 will have more torque but do you have any figures for this?

The 90 Hp has LESS torque but its also MORE ecconomical than the 110 Hp engine. The 90 Hp will average 50-55 Mpg and the 110 about 45-49 Mpg depending on the driving style. In your case i sugest you go for the 110-115 Hp engine as it is about 2 sec quicker as the 90 Hp engine in the same car.

A man at work bought a 90hp 1.9 tdi Audi A4, it looked OK but he sold it after 3 months as it was so underpowered.

This car can become underpowered as mileage builds up and it becomes necessary to use BP Optimax diesel; Unfortunately, this fuel is about 5p a litre more expensive and BP is usually not very competitive, on top of that. Fuel cleaners can be used regularly to keep in top condition.

As to MPG, many do exaggerate how much they get from this engine. All in town driving, London that is, may give you 34 - 38 mpg average, a bit better if you switch off the air conditioning.
Sure, if you do all journeys on motorways, average 100 miles at a time, and keep your speed down to 65 mph average, then your return may approach 50 mpg.
Diesel engines take longer to warm up to operating temperatures than petrol.

I think that car had serious issues: MAF or turbocharger on its last legs as i can assure you, the 90 Bhp is not slouch either ! I did drive my friend 98 Passat 1.9 TDI and its quick and nimble and averages 55-60 Mpg according to the on board computer. I also own a 98 a4 with a 2.5 TDI quattro engine that is verry quick for a diesel(due to the PSI Motorsport chip !) but only averages 35-42 Mpg depending on the driving style and it does have a 6 speed gearbox !

Appreciate your comments: The only way to reliably check MPG is to note mileage when filling fuel tank to capacity and then noting mileage covered and fuel used at the next fill up.
