Polo 97 1.0l gearbox issues?

Hi all, my dads polo, 1997 1.0li seems to be having a few issues.

first the gear box..... when trying to change gear, its very stiff..

the cluch seems fine, and i tested its bit in each gear and its grand.

it happens for every gear, really really stiff.

now he hasnt had it serviced in a while, and i can see gunk bulding up in the engine when i removed the oil cap... was an awfull sight, so ill service it for him soon.

could the box just need oil??? and if so where do u put the gear box into it?

(im a ford and vauxhall man, and have never owned a polo, sorry for the silly question)

when i looked under the rocker cover, at the top of the box from looking into the engine bay, i can see a hole that i think the gear box oil goes into, but just want to make sure... also if this is the case, there is no cover on it.. if u know what i mean. like missing the part to keep the oil in?>?

also what engine oil grade does this need? and gear box oil?

Apparently it's common for gearboxes to 'go' mine had those symptoms and just cost me £800. I hope for your sake it's not that. Mine had only done 44K miles, if only everything in life were as reliable as a VW eh?

lol at the reliable part...

i think there is close to 98k on my dads car now.... so if it is the box, then it gets scraped.

can anyone point out to me where the gear box oil goes? as i recon there is no oli in in, i do believe it was leeking somewhat, so i cleaned the aera, and will see 2mro if it leaking, or not.
