The boot on my 2001 Passat won't lock so i've been driving around in it today flapping about. Don't know whether it's a microswitch or solenoid problem (judging by existing threads these seem to be the most likely culprits!!).

However, what i want to know is, can the boot be locked manually whilst i get round to getting this fixed?? Secondly ,if it can, will I be able to unlock it again afterwards??

Any help much appreciated as always

    Hi there!

I've had this problem - solinoid in my case. I've got an estate (no idea about the design of the lock for the saloon if that is what you have, but one would presume it was the same mechanism). With the estate you have to remove the inside boot lid cover (four screws - easy) and then you can get to the lock. I was able to just move the mechanism by hand into the locked position . It is pretty straight forwards when you get in there. Then you have the delights of a car with a boot which doesn't open, but at least you won't have to park against walls all the time..

You guessed right. I was going to have a go at fixing myself but (as was so cold today) took it to my friendly local garage and they fitted new part all in for £42 - with half of that parts and VAT so quite pleased. Looked like a fiddly job too.

I wasn't impressed that the key lock didn't operate the boot opening as well - meaning no mechanical open and shut
