I have a MK 4 Golf V6 4motion. Great car but on ocasion from startup it won't select any gear. Its a manual box and seems to be affected if cold. After about 5 mins of messing around it will go into gear but not without encouragment ! Its only done 40k miles so I am suprised its got gearbox trouble already. Some plastic clip broke on the clutch recently which was repalced but I can't think that this is affecting things. The clutch is working fine. The gearbox is fine other than this issue it selects gears without any trouble and is not 'crunching' or anything. ANy ideas anyone ?

Try and scan the car and see if there are any fault codes stored in the Haldex differential control box as there may be somme issues ! Also get a mechanic to look under the car for bent gear linkage or broken gearbox mount, but that will make it difficult to select all the time !Also check the hydrolic(brake) fluid as it may need bleeding. How are the brakes ? Verry strange !!!

Buy a obd2 diagnostic cable/interface of E-bay and download the vag-com from the internet(look for sharing sites as you might find cracked ones: version 312 or 409) and with an old laptop you can do the same things as the dealer but without 90 pounds an hour labour costs !!!!

I forgot to mention that the clutch master cynclider clip broke about Oct time and this problem started just after. SOmething of a coincident ! Is it possible that the garage the fixed the master cylcinder clip didn't do it right ? The clutch seems to work ok i.e. it goes up and down now with the correct amount of resistance in the pedal and the bitting point is fine. I don't know much about haldex clutches but I understand they use hydralic brake fluid ? ALthough as I sa,y the clutch is going up and down and I'd be surprised if this problem is being caused by the clutch repair ? thnks v much

I think there is air in the abs unit and thats why the problems you experience when selecting gear ! It will need bleeding with diagnostic equipment(vag com) as there is no other way to remove the air bubles from the abs unit. Check www.rosstech.com for bleeding abs procedures and try to comprehend them ! Hope this helps. Merry X-mas !
