ok thanks guys, when i first turn the ignition on, the oil light comes on red for a couple ofr seconds (not flashing though) then it changes colour to yellow and starts, for about 10 secondsish.

so the scanning is that done with vag-com? how easy is it to change the oil sensor?
    thanks

I presume you have checked the oil level, yellow is level warning. When you open the bonnet, does the bonnet open symbol on the dash illuminate?

It has a bonnet catch contains a switch, component F266, part number 1J0 953 236 B at £21.69 from VW. This tells the instrument pack that the bonnet has been opened but not all have a warning lamp. If this signal is not received, the instrument pack will not reset the oil level warning.
