Hi all, i have just bought a 2000 1.8T sport, great car, love it to bits, but.... got a few problems...

    1) Engine management light is on, i have a basic fault code reader, and it says its the pre cat lamda sensor, i have been looking on ebay etc, and they have them, but are the 2 sensors the same? the one i have seen is part no. 058906265C. is this the right one for my car??

    2) Running temp, both coolant and oil never seem to warm up, they slightly lift and thats it? thermostat? is this a hard job on these?

    3) central locking, when i got it, the batterys had run out on the fob, its a 3 button one, i put new batterys in but it still doesnt work, i cant see a light on the fob to show its working? the only other key i have is the spare with no buttons on. If i open the drivers door with the key, it only unlocks that door, to let people in i have to use the button on the door? and the same when locking it? is there a way of resetting this or does it need taking to a gararge?

    Thanks,

    Ste.

first thing, replace the thermostat to get the engine to the right temperature. it could be a failed temp sensor though, but you need a more expensive computer to check that. chances are that the lambda sensor fault is due to overfuelling due to it running cold. fit a new stat, check it warms up, clear the lambda fault code and see what happens.

Never thought of the engine temp affecting the lambda, i will get a thermostat in it asap.

    Thanks mate

(ps the flexi part of the front pipe is blowing and needs replaced but i assumed this wouldnt affect the lambda's either)

a blowing exhaust can indeed affect it.

My guess is that this is causing the lambda fault more so then the stat

actually, check for lean or rich errors with the lambda fault, they should be there..

lean could be the hole, rich could be the overfuelling.

thanks for the advice, i have replaced the front pipe and the thermostat, coolant gets up to and sits at 90 now, oil seems to sit around 75.

I cleared the lambda codes and it came back on, reading S1 B1 lambda open circuit? im guessing it still needs a new lambda then, is the part number on this one i have seen right and am i right in that this is the pre cat sensor? (058906265C)

    Thanks,

    Ste.

regarding the central locking, heres the procedure for coding the fob

the previous owner may have replaced pump? when you unlock with the key in door then the rest of the doors should unlock when ign is turned on if you have the correct pump fitted

if the instructions dont work check batteries then check pump part number

    remote fob coding

    1. insert key into ignition and turn on (turn one notch do not start car) does not matter what type of key as long as it is coded to the immobiliser i.e capable of starting car

    2. insert second key (fob type) into drivers door lock and turn to lock car

    3. press unlock button on fob once (indicator may flash), wait six seconds press unlock button again, car will unlock, remove key

    4. open door and remove key from ignition, close door and press lock/unlock buttons on fob, car should now lock/unlock

    to code a second fob

follow steps 1 + 2 using second fob to be coded to lock drivers door then press unlock button twice, wait six seconds and press unlock again, then go to step 4

up to four keys can be coded to the pump, for third key you would press unlock 3 times, wait 6 seconds etc.... if you code key two but only press once it would replace key one as you would be storing it in position one

hi, thanks for the reply, i tried what you said but it didnt work, i ran my fault code reader and it says this...static: key 1 adaptation limit exceded. and static: alarm horm not found.

When i unlock the drivers door, i have to use the the door button to unlock the other doors and the same when i lock it, they dont open when i put the ignition on, also the alarm is not setting, the red led on the door is not flashing??

i will check the pump number but how will i know if its been changed?

    part number should be 8D0 862 257 E for a 2000 a4

if youve got an adaption limit fault code then that suggests it is a remote pump so its possibly faulty

its very common for the batteries in the siren to leak and wreck circuit board, causing it to squeal so they get disconnected
