but noticed as my mate was behind me when i put foot to floor there was quite a bit of smoke but engine sounded ok
    and still runnign fine now
jsut wondering if there was a leak in the intercooler pipe
woudl it be picked up by vagcom and woudl this cause a lot more smoke when putting foot to floor

intercooler leak on a TDi would give black smoke and normally power loss, it will show on vag com if the pressure drops below a given point.

I would say that a split intercooler pipe is definatley the cause after struggling for 3 weeks to solve the same symptoms on my own 1.9tdi . I was also experiencing the feeling of running out of fuel randomly when on long runs . All cured when i replaced the hose on top of the turbo going to the intercooler.

    hope this is of help
