I have an A4 1.8T Q 1999. When the heater is on there is a chemical/fume smell coming throughthe vents. The heater fan is also making a constant kind of whirring noise. The heater is still working but the smell is quire strong. Can anyone help?

Could be the fan has cracked or a piece of it has come away allowing it to rub on the housing. The noisy fan motor could also be attributed to failing motor brushes (a very, very common problem of which there are plenty of threads posted all over this site!) though I don't know if this would produce the chemical type smell you refer to.

The chemical smell could be an electrical burning smell?
