i'd phone 3 places, VW parts dept, Euro car parts and GSF.

then i'd purchase according to my findings, on the way home i'd go via halfords and aquire a haynes manual and diy.

    or

if you ask nicely i may scan the relevant pages out of mine for you.

Genuine discs are a good price and top quality but their pads are pricey so I would use Textar or Padgid pads.

hm I would say that pads are good price but discs are pricey but any way if you want to have good brakes without any squeeeeeeks then I would go for genune parts and if you are looking for better braking performance just replace genuine fluid with castrol prformance, its boiling point is a lot higher and metal coated brake hoses will make a dramatic difference.

I would buy some good brand discs from Eurocarparts online and match them up to some EBC Green Stuff pads. The EBC pads are a mild upgrade from standard pads and have the benefit of giving off a lot less brake dust than standard pads.

Was there any consensus on the disc size?

Putting my reg into various sites for the Gt Tdi 2.0 140bhp gives me a choice of front sizes:280/289/312 and for the rears 255/260/286!

Yes that's what I found eventually. Euro Car Parts gave a variety of options (as do most sites inviting you to put in your car reg) but as the guy there told me if you actually ring them they have access to other databases which will ensure you receive the correct part.

Have to say am very impressed with ECP, VW quoted me over £700 to replace pads and discs all round, Kwick Fit came in at £450, ECP supplied Pagid parts for £130 and a local mechanic will charge 2 hrs labour cash in hand £100...so £230 all in, certainly worth shopping around!
