My 238 bhp mkiv turbo does 32 mpg, you should get 37+ from a standard car unless your flat out every where, try a new MAF from VW, low mpg is a falure sign.

    Hi Chris
Ive just replaced my Mass Air Flow meter and my 98 1.8t does 28mpg around town. Slight improvement to the usual 24mpg before MAF went in!!

I have a FWD 1.8T and do around 60 miles a day driving to work and back along twisty A-Class rural roads. Routinely get between 34 and 36 mpg depending on how much overtaking I do.

Amazingly i managed 44.6 mpg the other day on a 60 mile a road trip, 1.8T, although i was following a steady flow of traffic at about 40 to 50 mph. It just goes to show if you have a light right foot they are very economical. Incidentally, when i got home the misses took it into town and when she came back the average mpg had dropped to 36 mpg!!!! Must put a thicker wooden block under the accelerator pedal!!.
