Can someone please help me, I have a P reg gti 8v. All was fine at first, it would start fine and occasionally cut out on idle, or whenever you dipped the clutch, (at junction or in traffic), it would start straight away no probs. This continued for a couple of months. Then suddenly about 1 month ago it cut out and refused to start. AA out, diagnosed faulty coil. I got the coil, dizzy cap, rotor arm, leads & plugs replaced during the service. Problem continued. My mechanic gave car to sparky, who diagnosed distributor and replaced it. still cutting out, computer diagnosed crank sensor, replaced it with a second hand one, problem cured..........Then brand new problems, rev limiter would kick in at 5000revs, back to garage, who manually adjusted the dizzy, limiter problem gone. Perfect......No, it now drives fine on very short journeys, but if i drive it round longer, it starts stuttering, rev needle starts jumping up and down in time with engine, i can hear a clicking in time with the rev gauge from the relays. it then cuts out, refuses to start straight away. leave it a while and it will fire up again, but shortly same problem, i have repleced the relay, so its not that....it seems to happen when something gets hot, but leave it to cool and its ok. Dont think connected to temp gauge at all. Any ideas?

Which relay did you replace, 30 or 167? The symptoms you describe are still a faulty G28 crank speed sensor; they don’t like being moved around so you need to fit a new genuine VW (part number 037 906 433 A) but these are £158.65. Another fault code read may show the G28 sensor is still the fault. Whoever replaced the dizzy doesn’t know the ADY/AGG Simos engine, you can unplug the hall sender (G40) on these engines and the engine will keep running.

Wrong one, you should have replaced 30. 167 is the fuel pump relay and they hardly ever fail, 30 is the ECU relay and the problem part. The VW part number is 165 906 381.

the crank sensor was replaced with a second hand unit, they only found the fault on the crank sensor when they had a diagnostic machine plugged in and it stalled. it didnt store the fault code. Also it is now a different stalling problem since i had all of the work done.
