My father and I have just had a new (08) Estate. my father has just bought a pair of MAD Springs for the rear, these are a secondary coil spring that fits inside the existing Coil spring.

To fit these you need to detach the lower mount of the Shock absorber a 21mm pin. having taken off the wheel i attempted this Pin with a ring spanner as there is not room to get a socket in. because of the spring, the only problem is you cannot get enough leverage with a spanner even with a 600mm length of pipe on the end of the spanner. i do not feel safe to apply any more pressure to this pin as it threads into the Cast alluminium of the lower suspension arm.

Firstly i would like to know if anyone knows the torque setting for these and if they are supposed to be this tight?..

And is it likely that VW have put Locktight on the pin?. if this is the case then i will have to have another go with the big spaner and try tapping the head of the pin with a small hammer to try and crack the locktight.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Thanks for the info the 180Nm explains why it is not budging with a ring spanner. however getting a socket onto the pin is not going to be an easy task. would you have any idea of how easy it is to undo the top mounting for the shock absorber.. do the bolts/pins have nuts inside the car behind the trim or are they captive. dont want to have to remove trim for this job. if the top mounts are not an easy job then i will focus more effort to cracking the bottom mounts.

Thanks again for the useful info.
