    Hello all,

I was having a look under the bonnet yesterday and noticed a pipe leaking some fluid. The visible part of the pipe runs from just underneath/behind the battery downwards in the gap on the N/S of the engine to some kind of joint on the top of the N/S end of the steering rack. The pipe is metal where it is underneath the battery, becoming rubber for a length before it meets with the steering rack.

From the above description, does anyone know what system this pipe is part of? I'm presuming steering? Apologies the description may not be very good!

    Vehicle is a 2001 TDI 115.

Power steering pressure hose, these are common for leaking.

    Thanks Crasher.

Could this possibly be the cause of the sloppy steering problems I am experiencing, (which have been well documented in a separate post)?

I was about to embark on a part by part replacement of ball joints, bushes etc until I found the cause, but this leaking pipe could well be the answer....I hope!

Loss of fluid makes the steering goes heavy.

Probably not going to cure it then. I've got very light, floaty steering, so the problem is still going to lie in the bushes or balljoints etc.

Light steering says to me over inflated tyres or camber out (which isn't adjustable). The other possibility is a fault in the rack valve unit, the ZF rack is no where near as reliable as the TRW unit used in the Golf 2 and 3.

The tyre pressures are spot on, and I've also tried with lower pressures, higher pressures etc, but the problem still persists, so I think tyres can definately be ruled out. Also, it ran fine on an old worn out set of tyres, and ran perfectly for months on the tyres I had fitted late last year.

I'm reluctant to think that the rack is at fault, firstly because although the car is a 2001 model, it has only done 20k, secondly, this isn't the first Bora this exact problem has happened on. It happened on my last Bora, and a Citroen C4 before that. (I got rid of the C4 due to incurable steering probs and the same has happened to my Boras!)

Speed hump damage seems to be the only common issue I can think of. The car was absolutely fine until about 6 weeks ago, and gradually the steering has loosened and gone very light/sloppy with lots of wander, following of cambers and ruts and hard to control when it's windy, and snatching/no stability when accelerating and braking.

Garages keep telling me there's nothing wrong with bushes, wishbones, balljoints etc etc etc, but having read other forums, many Skoda, Seat and Audi drivers complain of the same problem as me, and again, garages cannot find any faults....but something has definately changed.

With reference to the camber being out...if it is, would I see uneven tyre wear? Would this get picked up on a tracking check? Last tracking check was OK, and tyres are wearing evenly.

Rack valve unit: Does replacement of this involve a whole new rack?

Sorry for such a long post, but I'm reaching the end of my tether with the car!

It does sound as though you have a bush or ball joint at fault and track rod inner bush wear is common on the Golf 4 but not at that mileage.

Camber should be checked/adjusted before the tracking with the tracking but as it is non adjustable, tends to be ignored.

The valve body is built into the rack and I have known G4 racks fail at very low mileages.
