Hi I'm in the process of changing the cambelt on my 150bhp PD engine Golf. All was going fine until I tried to remove the engine mount on the block ...all the bolts are out and it's loose but there is no clearance to pull it out of the way. Tried jacking the engine up and down but no luck? any help appeciated!!!!

Yep! Top job this! The engine mount will come out (Easier than it goes back in!) if you lift the engine and lever it towards the near (Passenger) side. Its a two man job. One to wrestle with the mount and one to lever the engine (That was my job while my Dad 'just' fitted the mount!). I used a 5ft length of 3x3 wood.

When you put the new belt on, make sure the belt is correctly lined up. Mine was just one tooth out and it wouldnt start. There is a special set of tools for locking the pulleys and lining up the belt correctly.

No doubt Crasher will be able to offer futher (More proffessional!) advise.

Many thanks for the reply glad i'm not the only one struggling with it!. I had another look and after disconnecting the power steering pipe and jacking the engine up managed to get the mount out. Should be fun putting it back in!!
I have the 6mm drill bit in the cam sprocket ....no crank locking tool so I just marked the crank pulley with paint dabs ..also marked the old belt so i can transfer the marks to the new belt...hopefully this should be enough!

Bit confused by the new (gates) tensioner pulley it's different to that shown by the haynes bible. Is the pin inserted to fit the belt then removed to tension ?..where should the pointer be at correct tension ??..is it clockwise to tension the belt ??

Without the crank locking tool you will not get the timing spot on. I don't bother removing the mount, I work around it. Mind you, if I ever get my hands on the numpty that designed that set up...

Saying that, the three cylinder Polo 6N2 TDI is worse than the Golf 4.

Thanks crasher, I wish I could have left it but I couldn't see a way of sliding the tensioner off the stud with the mounting bracket in place. Are you supposed to 'fine tune' the cam timing with the adjustable cam sprocket with the locking tool in place ...is that why the locking tool is needed ??

Still confused by the tensioner..the type fitted was the same as I have (gates) and the pointer wasn't lined up with the notch on the backplate which seems odd
