I've just bought 1.6 16v SE Golf today i pick it up next tues. Cruise control works fine but original stereo has been removed and replaced with a JVC head unit. Therfore the steering wheel volume controls etc. are not working. I'm going to fit my Sony headunit which has a connection point in the back for stalk mounted controller. I doubt the VW wiring will just plug in think its a case of original unit back in or it won't work?

Check the BLUE (square-ish, i think 9 connectors) connector at the back of the head unit (in the loom). is it plugged into anything? I think that is the remote control/obd-control cable that goes up to instruments+steering wheel.

Did you get your multifunction steering wheel sorted in the end? Mine is working great now i bought an aftermarket wiring kit from connects2 which plugged in and worked off my sony headunit. the head unit you have must have the plug in back for a stalk control thats all really.

I know this might sound like a stupid answer but did you try it with the ignition on as on my misses Bora the volume up and down on the steering wheel only work when the ignition is on when its off you have'to use the knob on the head unit
