i know you have said "Sensible answers only"

however i use a big pair of mole grips to remove mine (as it does not matter if you damage it when its coming off... )

and then fit it by hand and tighten it by hand..

(i have a A4 and the filter is large so you can get a good grip when putting back on!)

However... buy yourself one of these... this items pretty cheap at the moment on ebay..

Cheers for that, I too have used this technique as well as punching a screw driver through the filter unit, gets a bit messy, thing is mine is for a TDI deisel engine and its a paper type filter which is housed in a cast alluminium unit with a nylon/plastic cap. I've tried my vice like grip but it an't wot it used to be, I've noted that around the outer part it has a lot of flat segments similar to what's on some of the other can like filter units (the normal ones) if you know what I mean.

Thanks for your reply anyway, nice to know there is someone out there.

Have you had a look on the net?
    Here for example: http://www.toolspot.co.uk/category/filter-wrenches
    or here: http://www.justoffbase.co.uk/Tool-Shop/Oil-Filter-Tools

I have used a big pair of swan neck pliers or a strap wrench if space is limited.
