ah i think i know what this is and should nto be do bad
your fan which cools your engine is attached directly to the engine
    via a pully
now because the amount of energy needed to spin engine it could when cold i propose re stall the engine
so what you do is attach the fan via vicous coupling which does not let the fan spin stright away and there is always a bit of a lag and thats whats the pully is for
    anyway
    you take off serp belt
remove the fan and pully replace
    and away you go
now this is from memory of another engine that is the same kinda thing

i very much doubt this is the cause of your stalls.

best get it fixed anyhow, the fan is a bit of a pain to get out on my 1.8 as there is so little clearance between it and the engine and the radiator. there may be a little more room in your 1.6 though.

think about how much resistance is put on the engine from all of its own heavy components, and then the flywheel, gearbox shafts, power steering pumps, coolant and oil pumps, alternator etc etc. the fan weighs peanuts in comparison and is unlikely to cause the stalling.

the point of the viscous unit is that it only locks up (and turns the fan) when the engine gets warm. this way energy is not wasted cooling a cold engine thats just been started.
