Hi Guys and Gals.... I'm looking for some help or advice. I've got a Mk 3 Golf GTi (1995 N reg). A few weeks back I went to unlock the central locking (using the key as no fobber) in the drivers side door. The key would turn but the door would not unlock. Since then I've been using the passenger door lock, which opens all of the central locking. Unfortunately, the passenger side has now decided not to work, and I'm currently having to unlock the boot and climb in through the back (not the best look in the world). The doors will now only open from the inside when I lift the door lock pin (only locks by depressing these as well). The doors open once unlocked by using the internal and external door handles. Could anyone give me an idea as to what is wrong with the locks and how I can fix them, before I end up breaking my back? Thanks

Hey Spadger, I had a simlar problem on my mk3 1.6 (L plate) except the door handle (drivers side) wouldn't open and the lock went.

This is a common problem in Golf's (so I've read) and it sounds like you'll probably need a door lock barrel repair kit - There are people on ebay who sell this for around £15.

Ended up buying a new handle and lock kit from ebay (about £30) and fitted it myself - worth investing in a Haynes manual but quite an easy job.

    Cheers

mrwindy. Thanks for your help. We ended up going to a VW garage and getting the doors locks fixed. It was the barrels in the locks and it cost us £70 for parts and labour. At least we can now get in the car without climbing through the boot.

Hi there, after reading your thread, I think I have a similar problem.
Unlocking my MK3 92 Golf CL works on both the driver and passenger doors, using the key. However sometimes, about 1/3 times, when it comes to locking/unlocking, the central locking doesn't activate, and I can only lock/unlock the one door. I am therefore forced to manually lock the other three doors and the boot. Because it's so intermittent, VW were unable to find a problem (i'm pretty sure they just checked the easily accessible connections).
I haven't tried taking anything apart yet, but any suggestions would be greatful!

    Rob

Sounds like the pneumatic central locking pump (in the boot) could be at fault. Common fault in early 90s VWs. My mate's Polo was always suffering from it.
